A significant security operation unfolded in Nice, France, leading to the arrest of approximately 100 individuals identified as fervent supporters of an Italian football club. The arrests occurred Tuesday evening, as authorities moved to prevent potential clashes ahead of a major European competition match. These individuals are suspected of intending to engage in confrontations with rival fans on the eve of their team’s Europa League debut against OGC Nice.
The city center saw a substantial police and gendarme presence, with over 200 officers deployed. The group, many of whom had their faces obscured, was reportedly gathered in two separate locations within the city center, a short distance apart. Upon the approach of law enforcement for identity checks, authorities discovered a cache of potential weapons, including sticks, knives, and hammers, alongside protective gear like bulletproof vests. Reports also indicate instances of altercations with police during the operation.
In light of these findings, all individuals present in the two groups were apprehended and taken into custody. The supporters now face potential charges for “participation in a group with a view to preparing voluntary violence against people” or property. These offenses carry a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros. notably, no acts of violence or property damage were reported prior to or following the arrests.
For the upcoming match, authorities have implemented an enhanced security plan, mobilizing over 400 police officers. The objective is to “prevent any disturbance to public order both in downtown Nice and in the immediate perimeter of the stadium and its surroundings.” The local prefecture has also imposed a ban on Italian supporters being present in downtown Nice, near transportation hubs, the airport, and the stadium from Tuesday afternoon until Thursday noon.
Supporters holding tickets for the match will be transported to the stadium via police-escorted bus shuttles originating from the city center. Similar escort measures will be in place for their return. Additionally, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs in the vicinity are required to close by 2 a.m. on the night of the game.
The mayor of Nice expressed disappointment that a more comprehensive ban on the movement of these supporters was not enacted, a measure he had previously advocated for. This incident brings to mind a previous security concern at the Allianz Riviera stadium in 2022, during a match against Cologne, which saw 32 injuries resulting from fan disturbances in the stands.
