Welcome back to “Beyond the Game,” where we delve deep into the inspiring stories of athletes who defy all odds. Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Paralympic athlete and wheelchair basketball star Ayşe Çınar. Ayşe, thank you for joining us.
Ayşe: It’s a pleasure to be here.
Moderator: Your story is incredibly moving, Ayşe. You know, I recently read about Canberk Sarkurt, a young man who, after a life-altering accident, discovered a passion for wheelchair basketball. His journey resonated strongly with me, as it mirrors your own in many ways.
Ayşe: Absolutely. Overcoming adversity is something we both share.
Moderator: Canberk’s story touched on the importance of family support. He mentioned that his parents were his lifeline, never letting him lose hope. How crucial has your own family been in your journey?
Ayşe: My family has been everything. They were my anchor when I felt lost, my cheerleaders when I doubted myself. They never saw my disability as a limitation but as a challenge to overcome, and that belief empowered me.
Moderator: That fosters such a powerful mindset! We often talk about the physical resilience needed in sports, but mental fortitude is just as crucial. Canberk talked about finding purpose on the basketball court. would you say adaptive sports offer a unique sense of empowerment for individuals with disabilities?
Ayşe: Definitely. Wheelchair basketball became more than just a sport for me; it became a platform to reclaim my independence, to prove to myself and the world that my disability doesn’t define me. There’s a sense of camaraderie amongst athletes with disabilities – we understand each other’s struggles and triumphs in a way that others might not.
Moderator: That sense of community is inspiring.
Now,Canberk is only a month into his training, and he’s already showing remarkable progress. What advice would you give him as he ventures into this new chapter?
Ayşe: Persistence is key. There will be setbacks, frustrations, moments when you question yourself. But trust the process, believe in your potential, and surround yourself with supportive people who will push you to be your best. Most importantly, remember to enjoy the journey.
