We almost forget it, but Wesley Sonck and Romelu Lukaku briefly rubbed shoulders in the national team. The former striker, now a consultant, remembers it well.
Romelu Lukaku and Wesley Sonck crossed in the selection more than ten years ago, for a kind of passing of the torch during which the two men were together on the pitch for the only time in their careers: it was on March 3, 2010, against Croatia (0-1 loss); Lukaku started the match and played 77 minutes, Sonck entered at half-time. “His progress since is incredible. He started in 2010 in selection, when I was finishing. If I stood behind him, no one could see me,” laughs Sonck.
Even though young, Lukaku was already showing the qualities of the prolific striker he will become. “He was fast, very strong physically, technically at ease. Romelu is the modern player par excellence.” And Wesley Sonck knows what he’s talking about, he who has evolved – this time for several years – with a caption: Zlatan Ibrahimovic. “Him, from the first training together, I knew it was world class. He was 1m96 but played like a guy of 1m75. His technique, his speed, his movements, for a guy so tall, that is. was fantastic to watch, ”Sonck admits.
“We were friends. And Ibrahimovic is indeed one of the strongest teammates I have known in my career. But in the same basket, I put Maxwell (Ajax) and Eden Hazard in selection”, he concludes. “Ajax remain a great team. When you see what the club still managed to do a few years ago by beating Real Madrid, Juventus … It remains a great European club.”
