With the Rouen Huskies, the word “victory” has almost become a habit. Rouen Baseball 76 won Sunday, October 24, 2021 the final of the French baseball championship, at the end of the suspense, facing the Templars of Sénart (Île-de-France). In 18 years, the team has won… 16 titles. A stratospheric prowess, especially since the Huskies were far from the favorites of the competition this year.

“There is in the DNA of this team a culture of winning,” says Xavier Rolland, former president who handed over the reins of the club in 2020 to his brother, Pierre-Yves. Filled, the former number 1, now a member of the steering committee, underlines the very special flavor of this victory. “We were on a year of reconstruction. We have turned a page. Lots of experienced, hard core players have left. And yet, in the end, it’s still the Huskies who win!

“The most beautiful of titles”

Xavier Rolland relishes this title. He does not hide his joy, and even speaks of one of the “craziest” and “most beautiful” victories.

“The guys were huge. They have shown a lot of maturity. We would have thought we were going to crack, but we were very strong in the decisive moments. And then, the script, the finale, everything was incredible. “

A lot of players say it’s the best of titles, because we came out of nowhere this year!

With a rebuilt team and focusing on youth, Rouen Baseball 76 thwarted the predictions of observers, who saw a final between Montpellier and Sénart. “The start of the season was complicated, but we have gained momentum,” insists Xavier Rolland. With at the end, the victory in the final of the championship of France!

Figure of the youth of the club, it is Martin Vissac, 21 years old and with the club since 2008, who gave the point of victory to his team. The player was also elected MVP (most valuable player) of the final.

Always more victories

The young players wanted to continue in the line of the great victories of the Rouen club, and to mark a little more the history of French baseball. It is now done, with this 16e title. “Even though we weren’t favorites, there was a certain pressure to succeed,” says Xavier Rolland.

There was also pressure from his brother, Pierre-Yves, at the head of the club for his first season. “We celebrated together his first title as president, and there will be others behind, I’m sure! ”

The future of the Huskies

This trophy is also a nice nod to Keino Perez, the Huskies coach who played his last game on Sunday. “We will miss him,” says Xavier Rolland. Despite this departure, the former president looks to the future with serenity: “There is talent behind, and new generations who are hungry for trophies. “

Symbol of this conquering youth, the Huskies won Sunday, October 24 the French Open in under-18 baseball. A proof, if one was still needed, that Rouen Baseball 76 has good years ahead of it.
