Succeeding in a trade in the NBA is always a combination of circumstances, some deals can sometimes fail because of details. However, such a move almost saw the light of day, a few months ago… and it could have changed the landscape of the NBA for good!
If he’s still a then-current Philadelphia player, it’s not for lack of trying to trade Ben Simmons. Abyssal in the playoffs, especially during the series lost to the Hawks, the winger has not smelled of sanctity in the city of Brotherly Love for a while. So far, however, no one has been able to come to an agreement with GM Daryl Morey.
What few people know is that the Australian could have left the franchise much earlier … Indeed, as explained Shams Charania, Benny was already quoted in trade rumors at the start of the 2020-21 season. And according to the NBA insider, one franchise in particular had been designated as a drop-off point:
Ben Simmons was almost transferred to the Rockets with Matisse Thybulle and two first-round picks in negotiations over James Harden, but Houston decided to trade Harden with the Brooklyn Nets instead.
So here we are talking about a trade that would have had absolutely monstrous proportions! Especially since each franchise would have gained something. Houston would have thus recovered a real conductor doubled as a big defender, who could have brought structure to the offensive game of the Texans. Thybulle would also have brought talent off the bench, as well as a reasonable contract.
As for the Sixers, we would have had the right to a titanic duet between The Beard and Joel Embiid. The offensive potential of this association would have gone through the roof, especially since the two men are much more complementary on paper than Simmons and The Process are. While he’s nowhere near as good a defender as the Boomer, Harden has his insane talent on the other side of the pitch, as well as a real outside shot.
Unfortunately, this scenario will ultimately never materialize. As Charania recalls, the rear was sent to the Nets, where he is having fun now. As for Philly, the franchise finds itself with the same problem on its hands, a year later… We can speak of a real missed opportunity for the fans of Pennsylvania.
One thing is certain, this trade would have literally set the NBA community on fire if it had taken place. It will only remain satde of the “what if? », To our great regret … Not sure, however, that Brooklyn shares this opinion!
