    • La Liga has now given Barcelona the opportunity to sign a forward emergency
    • Middlesbrough Martin Braithwaite’s flop is the last player to be mentioned
    • Lucas Perez and the target of January Tottenham Willian Jose have also been linked

Barcelona have obtained permission from La Liga to sign an emergency to replace the injured Ousmane Dembele.

Dembele was barred for six months with a tear in his hamstring after undergoing surgery in Finland last week, and the severity of the injury saw La Liga give the Catalan giants the go-ahead to sign a replacement.

The club now has 15 days to sign a player who is currently trading in the Spanish top division or is a free agent – despite the European transfer window being closed.

Their new signature will be able to play La Liga matches and will therefore not be available for selection in the Champions League, which will resume Barcelona when they face Napoli in the last 16 weeks of Tuesday.

Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona sent the relevant documentation to the La Liga medical committee on Thursday asking for permission to sign a replacement.

The go-ahead was then given Monday morning after the committee confirmed the injury as a long-term layoff, which they describe as a problem that will keep a player out for at least five months.

Barcelona are desperate to add a striker to his team, with Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Ansu Fati the only strikers currently available for Quique Setien after the January releases of Carles Perez and Abel Ruiz.

The last name that was thrown into the hat by Mundo Deportivo is the former Middlesbrough flop Martin Braithwaite, who has scored eight goals for Leganes this season.

The Danish international has only scored nine times in 40 appearances during his two years at Riverside Stadium after joining the club from Toulouse’s Ligue 1.

Braithwaite has scored just nine goals in 40 appearances in his two-year spell at Middlesbrough

But the 28-year-old is now a shocking target for Quique Setien’s team who have given a good account of themselves since arriving on an initial loan to Leganes in the transfer window last January.

The Madrid team then agreed on a four-year deal with the player to make the move permanent last summer after scoring five goals and recording as many assists in 19 appearances in the second half of last season.

Getafe’s Angel Rodriguez, Tottenham’s target in January Willian Jose, former Arsenal and West Ham striker Lucas Perez and Real Betis star Loren Moreno have also been heavily connected with the filling of the void temporarily left by Dembele at the Camp Nou.

The Barcelona players have shown their support for the struck Frenchman – who joins Luis Suarez on the sidelines as a long-term absentee – by wearing his shirt n. 11 before the 2-1 win against Getafe on Saturday.
