She is only 15 years old, but Cori Gauff has again won an important victory. At the Australian Open the unplaced American in the third round eliminated Japanese title defender Naomi Osaka with 6-3, 6-4.
In the first round, Gauff had – just like when she made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year – already beat Venus Williams. Osaka did not have a good day with thirty unnecessary mistakes.
Gauff hopes to take a selfie with Rod Laver
“Is this really my life?”, Gauff wondered after the job. “I mean, two years ago I lost here in the first round of the junior tournament and now I win my first game at the Rod Laver Arena. I can’t believe it.”
She continued: “I saw Rod Laver (the 81-year-old Australian tennis legend, ed.) Walking down the corridor a few times, but I don’t dare speak to him. I would like to take a selfie with him.”
