Route du Rhum: The Cléac'h capsizes with Banque Populaire

The Maxi Banque Populaire IX capsized on Tuesday around noon while sailing 340 miles in the northeast of the Azores. The wind conditions were 30/35 knots (65 km / h) with 5 meters of sea. The boat seems to have capsized following the rupture of its port float.

Armel Le Cléac'h could immediately trigger his distress beacon. The rescue operations were triggered. This is his 2e capsizing since the launch of the Maxi, 18 months ago.

Complicated weather conditions

Monday, two other Ultimate, those of Sebastien Josse (Edmond de Rothschild) and Thomas Coville (Sodebo), had suffered a big damage. The two skippers have since found refuge in A Coruña (Spain).

The sailors of this 11th Route du Rhum, left Sunday of Saint-Malo, have to deal with very complicated climatic conditions. More than 40 of them have returned to a port to repair or simply to shelter.
