Juncandella wins dominantly in Brands Hatch

Daniel Juncandella, Mercedes, recovered from a bad start from pole position to, in the end, take his first DTM victory in the opening race on Saturday at Brands Hatch. At the start, Juncandella fell to the third place, but quickly regained the second place in the pit stops and then beat Lucas Auer. Auer jumped to the first place at the start, with Audi driver René Rast following him to second place after overtaking Juncandella at Paddock Hill Bend and Druids after the poleman suffered from a poor start. But Juncandella regained the position almost immediately when Rast, who won the most recent round at Zandvoort last month, went to the pits at the end of the first round, after which he devoted himself to chasing Auer after an early period of low speed, this to allow the Audi RS5 of Loic Duval to be recovered from a gravel trap. Juncandella went to the pits at the end of the seventh lap, emerging ahead of Augusto Farfus' BMW. Two laps later he pounced on Auer to snatch the lead after the pit stop. Farfus also overtook Auer, but could not match Juncadella's pace in the second half of the race, leaving the 2012 European Formula 3 champion in full freedom to claim his first victory in his 67th start in the DTM. From fifth place on the grid, Farfus achieved his first podium of the season. Auer clung to the third position, finishing two seconds behind Rast, while Eng completed the top five in his BMW after resisting the pressure in the final part of Gary Paffett. The championship leader, Paffett, approached Eng quickly in the closing stages, but could not find the way to overtake him. Former Formula 1 driver Pascal Wehrlein was seventh ahead of Edoardo Mortara. The double champion Marco Wittmann was ninth, more than half a minute behind the winner Juncadella. Mike Rockenfeller got the last point thanks to a late overtaking on Robin Frijns.
