Down youngster Rhys McClenaghan won the European Championship gold in the pommel horse after a sensational final appearance in Glasgow.

The 19-year-old became the first Irish gymnast to win a European medal after beating the seven other finalists with 15,300. In the fight against British Olympic champion Max Whitlock, McClenaghan went through an almost perfect routine to win gold.

McClenaghan is the first Irishman to have won a European final. His gold is the fourth medal for Ireland at the championships after the silver oars of the O & # 39; Donovan brothers, Thomas Barr's 400m hurdles bronze and Shane Ryan's bronze in the 50m back.
