Champions League: Schalke rewarded against Galatasaray

Champions League: Schalke rewarded against Galatasaray
  • FC Schalke 04 beat Galatatsaray 2-0 after a strong performance.
  • Paris Saint-Germain still concede the equalizer in Naples to 1: 1.
  • Liverpool lose surprisingly in Belgrade 2-0. Marko Marin prepares both goals.

Thanks to Guido Burgstaller and Mark Uth, Schalke 04 continued their upswing in the Champions League and took a giant step towards the last sixteen. The Royal Blues won against Galatasaray Istanbul 2-0 (1-0) on matchday four and remain unbeaten in the premier class.

The Austrian Burgstaller had brought the team of coach Domenico Tedesco in front of 54,740 spectators in the fourth minute after a bad mistake by guest keeper Fernando Muslera lead. The industrious national player Uth rewarded superior Schalke with his second goal of the season for the miners (57.) on presentation of Burgstaller and made the third competitive win within seven days perfect.

With eight points Schalke in Group D now has bright prospects for the second round. A victory in the penultimate group match at the Portuguese champions FC Porto on 28 November would mean the entry into the knockout stage.

Guest goalkeeper Muslera failed the concentration right at the beginning of the game completely: During a trip to the edge of the box, he let the already caught ball slip out of his hands again. Burgstaller responded quickly and scored the ball from an acute angle into the orphaned goal.

Tedesco had changed their starting line-up to two positions compared to the 3: 1 in the Bundesliga against Hannover 96 on Saturday and proved with the inclusion of Rudy and especially Burgstaller a lucky touch. Captain and goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann was back in the squad for the first time since five competitive games after recovering from adductor problems, but took his place on the bench.

Since Galatasaray looked shocked after the early Schalke leadership, his replacement Alexander Nübel was only required after 17 minutes. A dangerous counterattack by the Turks defused the U21 national goalkeeper in front of his own sixteenth. Eleven minutes later Garry Rodrigues narrowly missed, otherwise Galatasaray often played his counterattack too sloppy.

The Schalke had the larger game in a fast-paced game, but these were the best chances. After 21 minutes Amine Harit had the 2: 0 on the foot, but the Moroccan hit the ball from eight meters over the gate. Even Rudy with a post from distance (38th) and shortly after Burgstaller (39th) missed the second goal, which would have been earned at this time.

Even after the break, the game kept its intense but fair pace. The Turks were determined from the cabin, but Schalke held against it and caught Galatasaray in the 57th minute cold: Burgstaller served Uth from the right side, this completed from eleven meters. As a result, the resistance of the guests was finally broken.

Paris with setback in Naples

Thomas Tuchel and Paris Saint-Germain, however, have missed the hoped-for victory. The French football champion had to settle for SSC Napoli 1-1 on Tuesday and is third in Group C with five points behind SSC Napoli under former Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti and front runner Liverpool with coach Jürgen Klopp (both 6 points). In Naples, former Bayern professional Juan Bernat (45. + 2) brought PSG into the lead shortly before half-time. But Lorenzo Insigne managed a penalty by the equalizer (63.). After the 2: 2 in the first leg Naples wins the direct comparison, which would decide in case of equality on the progress.

Barcelona in the last sixteen

Even without Lionel Messi FC FC moves into the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Argentinian belonged to his forearm fracture for the first time again to Barca squad, came in the tough away game in Milan but not used. Brazil's Malcolm leaped into the breach, bringing the team around national keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen into the lead (82 ') before Mauro Icardi (87') equalized. With ten points Barca is ahead of Inter (7) and can not be displaced by the first two places. Third is Tottenham Hotspur (4) after a 2-1 (1-0) draw against PSV Eindhoven (1).

Liverpool loses in Belgrade, Monaco goes down

Team manager Jürgen Klopp has suffered an unexpected defeat with Liverpool FC in the Paris Group. Last season's finalist lost 0-2 (0-2) to Red Star Belgrade, and faces a very tight group C tie.

Goal scorer Milan Pavkov brought Belgrade in front of 51,318 spectators early in each case after preliminary work by former international Marko Marin (22/29) and the Marakana Stadium to the boil. "We are from Liverpool, we are not impressed by the atmosphere," Klopp had said before the match. On the pitch disappointed Liverpool, who had won 4-0 in the first leg, but over long stretches.

With six points, the Englishman remain leaders for the time being, but can be overtaken in the evening either by SSC Naples (5) or Paris St. Germain (4). Red Star (4) may also hope for his first victory in the premier class since 1992. Xherdan Shaqiri was not traveling to Serbia for political reasons. Because of tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, the Swiss football player with Kosovar roots in Belgrade would have threatened a hostile reception.

Deep in the crisis, meanwhile, is the AS Monaco with the new coach Thierry Henry. The penultimate French Ligue 1 lost to FC Brugge 0: 4 (0: 3) and is in Group A with Borussia Dortmund with just one point on the final rank. For Bruges (four points) it was the first victory.

Hans Vanaken hit a left-footed shot (12 ') and a handball (17') initially sent a brace, while Brazilian Wesley (24 ') soon added a 3-0 win. The final was captain Ruud Vormer (85.). The Monegasque thus continue to wait for the first victory under Henry.

Niko Kovac and the Trojan Mole

Failure to provide assistance at all levels: Before the game against Athens, coach Niko Kovac has to accept the question of whether he still has enough support from the responsible and the team.
