Tah has 828,000 subscribers on YouTube and almost 728,000 followers on Tiktok. To raise those numbers, he goes to dangerous places and performs stunts that should lead to spectacular videos. Earlier this year he went on Survivaltocht on Snake Island in Indonesia, the hometown of thousands of fatal snakes.
Dara also went to the jungle in Papua, the western part of New Guinea in Indonesia. The influencer shared a video of the adventure on Tiktok. “We found a cannibal tribe,” you can read at the beginning. In the Tiktok video, Tah is in a boat with two cameramen, a driver and a local guide. When a native tribe on the bank notices them, they are immediately threatened. “I think they focus their arches on us, boys,” says the Irishman. “Seriously, this is scary.”
The men decide to approach the residents. The guide advises Tah to offer them something of food. The influencer brought a bag of salt and cookies. He puts some salt on his hand, so that one of the residents can taste. “Oh God, he doesn’t look like he liked it,” says Tah when the man spits out the salt. “Be careful, we have to leave,” says the guide worried when the man takes his bow. “We are not welcome, this is very dangerous.”
“No cannibals”
The Irish influencer goes viral with his video, but the reactions may not be what he had hoped. Many quotes that the indigenous residents in the video are not cannibals at all, but simply people who want to live in peace and seclusion. “Have you just invaded their country to call them ‘scary’?” Says someone. “He has the guts of his forefathers,” writes another. “Leave them alone,” it still sounds.
Others do not believe that the video is real. “The boat driver has found a few men in the bar to pretend to be of a tribe,” laughs someone. However, most comments are about the choice of gift. “Salt? Give him at least a cookie.” The video was viewed more than 17.7 million times.
For more than 100 days, Jamilla Baidou has been streaming her life in exchange for money, and that puts bad blood: “completely unethical”
It is not clear which tribe is in the video. On Papua would be 250 tribes, each with their own language and customs. About the Asmat, a tribe that lives in South Papua, has often been speculated in recent decades that they are doing cannibalism and headhnelles. In 1961 the son of a rich American family was missing in New Guinea while filming a documentary. Many theories state that he was killed and eaten by the Asmat.
