This is what it looked like in 2022 when the NFL visited Munich.

It’s that time again this weekend. The National Football League is “back in Bayern” (back in Bavaria), that’s the catchy marketing motto. New York Giants against Carolina Panthers: the NFL is visiting Munich for the second time and in Germany, the most important foreign market, for the fourth time. The US professional league wants to become the No. 2 most popular sport here.

The NFL’s goal: $25 billion in sales

Germany Governor Alexander Steinforth formulated this bold claim before the football stars competed in the Bavarian capital for the first time in 2022. Ambitious – but almost cute considering the NFL master plan.

Our goal is to reach a global audience and become a global sport.

Roger Goodell, NFL-Chef

Goodell is used to thinking big. In 2010, four years after the 32 team owners elected him commissioner, he boldly promised to increase the annual revenue of the world’s most financially powerful league from $8 billion to $25 billion by 2027.

A daring plan even for the NFL money machine. With luck and skill, Goodell is now almost there. The league recently broke the $20 billion mark.

NFL revenue has exploded

Merchandising, tickets, TV rights – revenue has exploded. Powerful new players such as Amazon and Netflix are entering the market. There are more games and therefore more to distribute. Most recently, the league discovered match days over Christmas as a source of money. More advertising millions are pouring in because sports betting has been largely legalized in the USA.
Even the surroundings are gilded. The so-called Combine, the showcase of talent, has long been just as much a TV event as the talent selection, the draft. US cities that are left out of the Super Bowl, the league’s cash cow, also compete for the events. In addition, debt capital will soon be allowed to flow into the league from investors hungry for returns.

Football expert Esume sees great potential

“The growth is insane – and a lot is still possible,” said German TV commentator Patrick Esume recently in “Capital”. The path out into the world now promises great potential.

Goodell has consistently pushed forward internationalization. One of his first decisions was to bury NFL Europe and its successors, which were unpopular with club owners, and replace them with regular NFL games in London.

The fact that the league does not spend time abroad like European football with boring test matches as bait for fans is part of its success. Since its debut in 2005 at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City, the NFL has steadily expanded its range of league games abroad.

Are the Jaguars coming more often?

The most recent stop was Sao Paulo in Brazil in September. The Giants versus Panthers game in Munich is the 55th international game in a good twenty years. Madrid will be added next year. Returning to Mexico also seems certain. In Brazil, Rio is now at the top of the wish list. For Europe, Paris and Dublin are the next hot candidates.

However, a separate team for Europe remains a thing of the future for the time being. Especially since the Jacksonville Jaguars, like the football club FC Fulham owned by US billionaire Shahid Khan, are now renovating their stadium in Florida for $1.2 billion. However, it is quite possible that London’s permanent guest of recent years will jet across the Big Pond more often during the renovation.

Steinforth gives German fans hope

Starting in 2025, the NFL will allow up to eight “away” games, and if the league follows Goodell’s vision and adds another game day to the season, perhaps as many as 16 soon.

Good news for German fans. “We have come to stay,” says NFL manager Steinforth. Perhaps the NFL will expand the contract with Munich and Frankfurt, which expires in 2025, to several games a year based on the London model. Or venues are added. Berlin and Düsseldorf have their hopes up.
