Benjamin Mendy won a legal battle against Manchester City on Wednesday, who will have to pay several million pounds to the former defender for unpaid wages. Suspended by the Football Association (FA) after accusations of sexual offenses in 2021, Mendy, who received 500,000 pounds per month, had his salary cut by the club while he was on remand.
Judge Joanne Dunlop ruled that the FA’s suspension constituted an “unintentional obstacle” to the performance of his contract, preventing Mendy from playing for Manchester City, but without giving the club the right to withhold his payment. “The club did not have any clause in the contract authorizing the withholding of salary under these conditions,” said the judge.
The exact amount the club will have to pay Mendy will be determined by his lawyers and those of Manchester City.
