Ho Chi Minh City Badminton Association Vice President Hoang Thi Thu Ha said Ms. Huynh Ngoc Lien is called by many as the “Iron Woman” of Vietnamese badminton because of her strict and hard work and fighting style for the athletes will develop the badminton movement in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam.

Ms. Huynh Ngoc Lien’s mark in more than 20 years of badminton participation helps propel tennis player Nguyen Tien Minh from an unknown to 5th place. In order to give Tien Minh and Vietnamese players the opportunity to compete in international competitions right at home, Ms. Huynh Ngoc Lien and her colleagues have teamed up since 2006 to re-establish the Vietnam International Badminton Open in Ho Chi Minh City. It has been organized 19 times so far and on an increasingly larger scale.

When she was still healthy, Ms. Huynh Ngoc Lien used her own money to accompany Nguyen Tien Minh and the Vietnamese badminton team on tours many times. With Mrs. Lien, badminton players don’t have to worry much about food, accommodation and competition procedures. In addition, Mrs. Lien establishes good relations with the World Badminton Association and the Asian Badminton Association, thereby taking the lead in the international referee training industry for Vietnamese badminton. Thanks to this, Vietnam now has many high-quality referees who take part in hosting the world’s leading badminton tournaments.

There was a time when she said goodbye to badminton, but then her passion and dedication made Ms. Huynh Ngoc Lien come back and say, “I still have a lot to thank badminton for.” When Badminton in Ho-Chi -Minh City is like a friend, I can’t leave you when you’re in trouble.

After a period of illness, the “iron woman” of Ho Chi Minh City badminton, Huynh Ngoc Lien, has just died at the age of 73, leaving many people in mourning.
