Badminton national team member Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) raised the issue of national team management right after the Paris Olympics and various absurdities of the Korea Badminton Association were all found to be true. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will request the dismissal of Kim Taek-kyu, chairman of the Badminton Association, and will allow operational improvements to be expanded to other sports, including the badminton team.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the final results of the Badminton Association’s office inspection and auxiliary project performance inspection at the annex of the Government Complex Seoul on the 31st. Immediately after winning the women’s singles gold medal in badminton at the Paris Olympics on August 5, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has formed an investigation team for the past two and a half months to investigate national team management, system improvement, auxiliary project performance status, and the operation of the association.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism came up with a plan to change old practices and expand training support by reflecting the opinions of the badminton team as much as possible. Regarding injury management and trainer participation, it was decided to guarantee individual players’ options and improve the absurd culture such as weekend and holiday outings and cleaning and laundry. It also announced its intention to improve the unreasonable system unique to the Badminton Association, such as removing restrictions on athletes’ participation in international competitions and strengthening the rights and interests of athletes related to sponsorship contracts.

Lee Jung-woo, director of the sports bureau of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who led the investigation, said, “As a result of individual interviews with the players, it was not much different from Ahn Se-young’s idea,” adding, “Strengthening support for the national team and improving the unreasonable system are natural for anyone to see. I feel sorry for the players to announce that I will improve now,” he said.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also requested cooperation from other sports organizations, including the Korean Sports Council, which operates the athletes’ village, as early morning training and mountain training, which are mandatory at Jincheon Training Center in Chungbuk, are also linked to other sports.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also requested the Songpa Police Station in Seoul on the 29th to investigate the case related to Chairman Kim, who is suspected of embezzlement and defiance by receiving sponsored goods without official procedures. In addition, the government will detect violations of the subsidy law, such as the promotion league, the youth club league business, and the payment of fees to the management company of association executives, and take steps to recover them. For this reason, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Fair Affairs of the Badminton Association demanded that Chairman Kim be dismissed and that the association’s secretary-general be punished severely.

“This is the last chance for the Badminton Association to correct its own mistakes,” Director Lee said. “If the association does not fix it again, we will take special measures such as designating a management organization that dismisses all executives of the association and suspending other budget support other than player support.”
