«A life for judo in Bra I feel at home like in Sardinia» – www.ideawebtv.it

Antonio Carnebianca, known to all as Nino, was born in Laconi (now the province of Oristano, previously Nuoro, ed.) on 2 March 1943. A life spent for sport, for Judo, for love and passion, the real one, towards this martial art which officially became an Olympic discipline in Tokyo 1964. But the “real Olympics” Carnebianca did and has won in the Granda, in Bra. City where you decided to move.

Let’s start from his homeland, Sardinia.
«I started judo at 9 years old, today I’m 81. I’ve always done judo in my life and I don’t know how to do anything else! I studied in boarding school with the Salesians and my grandparents raised me, because I was left without parents. A Salesian was my first judo teacher and I remember going with him to a gym in Cagliari. At 16 I won my first Italian title, in San Marino. The first call from the Italian national team arrived. In Sardinia there was great expansion for this sport, but it became complicated to organize travel and training in Rome. I couldn’t afford such a huge expense. At 18 I moved to Turin as a guest of friends. My real judo career began in Piedmont. In Turin they were very strong and it was a strategic city, a stone’s throw from France and Switzerland. Until I was 29, I played for the national team. I retired and went all the way to becoming an aspiring judo instructor. With other exams, I became an instructor and (subsequently, ed.) master 4th Dan. I could continue freely.”

We are here to listen to it.
«I held the role of technical director for Piedmont, then federal professor with assignments in Rome. I had the honor of receiving the 8th Dan. I am a meritorious teacher and responsible for all the technicians at the Italian level. For the most important matches, they call me to monitor referees and teachers. I am a true Sardinian and I feel like a son of Sardinia, even though I have lived in Bra since 1971. But I am sincere, I love Bra like my Sardinia. Because here it’s like being on the island, I have many Sardinian and Piedmontese friends. Every year, however, I return to Sardinia where they also call me as a teacher. Every return is like a rebirth. I am the only one in Granda to have attended the Academy, it was needed to have highly qualified technical teachers. It was a 7-month journey in Rome.”

Why Bra?
«In 1971 they inaugurated the current sports hall in Viale Risorgimento and were looking for a prominent judoka. They identified the undersigned. I was the only national athlete who gravitated to Piedmont. At the inauguration, as a guest of honor, I was the protagonist of a demonstration. A nice proposal arrived to stay in Bra. I accepted and here I am! I liked Bra and I liked the people of Bra, right from the start. I stopped to teach Judo, from 1971 to today.”

Later, the Judo Bra Center was born.
«The ambition of every judoka is to become a black belt, to win championships and international competitions. But it is also that of becoming a technician. My dream has always been to have a gym to teach and it has come true. I started as the owner of the Judo gym in via Vittorio Emanuele II in Bra, then I moved to piazza Carlo Alberto and via San Rocco. In 2010 I purchased the gym (in the former Brasport, today “Libellula Arena”, ed.). The Bra Judo Center, to be precise, was founded in 1971 with the help of my wife Mimma Faramia. My sons Guido and Fabio are helping me a lot. I took great care of the competition, we have 180 members. We managed to make almost 10 judokas win in the Italians, but I am the only teacher to have done so in the province of Cuneo. The successes continue, of course.”

Judo, for her.
«It is impossible to describe it in words. Many think it is violent, but instead it educates the body and the mind.”

Next steps?
«A very important race on November 10th in Bra, organized by my son Guido. At 29, as a champion, I decided to retire. I continue to come to the gym, have fun with the little ones and teach. I’ve traveled around Italy and the world a lot to gyms and arenas, now I’d like to visit, move around and be a tourist.”

His son Guido: «The same passion in the family on Sunday 10th November everyone at the sports hall»

Guido Carnebianca, Nino’s son, is on the front line: «My dad is the president of the Bra Judo Center – he says -, I am responsible for the technicians. In the family we have the same great passion. On Sunday 10th November we will experience this great event of the Judo Bra Trophy, at the sports hall in Viale Risorgimento starting from 8am and ending at 6.30pm. In synergy with the Fijlkam Federation of Piedmont, the Municipality of Bra, the Crc Foundation, Aido and Unvs. Boys, Children A and B and Children will be the protagonists. We will have the fortune and honor of hosting a delegation from the Italian National Fispic (Italian Paralympic Sports Federation for the visually impaired and blind) who took part in the very recent Paralympics in Paris. We have worked hard for months for this event. We know it will be a moment of high sporting level. The delegation will meet with the kids and will be available to the public present. We expect an influx of around 2,000 people, in the name of sport, judo and our city of Bra.”
