Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic in semis without playing after Alex de Minaur withdraws

Another semi-final for Novak Djokovic! The Serbian qualified without playing for the semi-finals of Wimbledon after Alex De Minaur withdrew, the organizers announced on Wednesday. The Australian was forced to withdraw from his quarter-final against the Serbian after an injury occurred at the end of his match against the Frenchman Arthur Fils.

“This is obviously not the announcement I wanted to make… I am devastated, but I have to withdraw due to a hip injury,” announced De Minaur. “I will be fine,” he had assured us after his victorious round of 16 match, but his face and his attitude on his chair just before leaving the court did not give the same impression of certainty as his speech.

Djokovic, the world number 2, who at 37 is seeking an eighth Wimbledon title to equal Roger Federer’s record and take his own record of Grand Slam titles to 25, will face American Taylor Fritz (12th) or Italian Lorenzo Musetti (25th) on Friday for a place in the final.
