Yannick Bru (UBB) after the victory against Racing: “We finished with very little fuel in the tank”

Yannick Bru (coach of UBB, victorious over Racing in the play-off, 31-17): “The match was what we expected, namely a big showdown. For several matches, Racing had placed emphasis on the ruck zone. Defensively, it was a team that conceded very few points. We knew there would be a big meeting on the contact zones. This was verified in the first fifteen minutes of the match. It was a free-for-all.

We also knew, with the individualities they had behind and the absences they had ahead, that part of the solution was found in the collective fight ahead. Our forwards responded with an interesting game on aerial conquest and mauls, which generated points and penalties too. We are very proud of the behavior of the players who took on this challenge. We are also aware that we finished with very little fuel in the tank. The last fifteen minutes were difficult for various reasons.

“It would have been a humiliation not to appear in the semi-finals in Bordeaux after the good times we had this season”

Yannick Bru, UBB coach

Now, we are focused on recovery and preparation for the match which is coming up in six days (the semi-final against Stade Français). It will be against a team very focused on conquest, which has a very defensive approach to its game and which does not succeed for us.

We have a big weight lifted from our shoulders because if we never talked about it among ourselves and if we never emphasized it with the players, it would have been a humiliation not to not appear in the semi-finals in Bordeaux after the good times we had this season. Sometimes when you don’t talk about things, they are even more present in people’s minds (smile). That explains why there was nervousness in the pre-match, at the start of the match, a few hand faults, a little unusual indiscipline.

We were all aware that we were playing big this (Sunday) evening compared to our supporters. The public was magnificent, frankly it would have been dishonorable not to offer them a semi-final. We knew we were expected. The players were on a mission this evening, not to have fun but to live up to the commitments we made at the start of the season.

Romain Buros (UBB fullback): “Compared to the qualifications of other years, the joy is a little more measured this evening. We want to go a little further. We know what to expect in six days, because it’s going to happen very quickly. Stade Français has been ready for more than a week. It will be a tough fight. We didn’t manage to win against them this year.

“It’s especially our big guys who are playing a very big game this evening. They are the ones who win it”

Romain Buros, UBB back

Tonight, defensively, we were quite good, especially in the first half. In second, we were overtaken a little because we were ahead in the score. They managed to make progress, we had slightly less aggressive climbs. It’s especially our big guys who have a very big match. They are the ones who win it. Although there were periods this year when they were in a little more difficulty, they still worked hard to improve. And tonight, I think we owe the match to them. »
