Yannick Borel injured and withdrawn from the Euro, Alexandre Bardenet recalled

Yannick Borel, injured in his muscles, withdrew from the European Championships. Alexandre Bardenet was called.

Swordsman Yannick Borel, French No.1, suffering from muscular discomfort, withdrew Thursday from the European Fencing Championships in Basel, replaced by Alexandre Bardenet, who contests his non-selection for the Olympics with the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF).

“It’s a muscular discomfort, the management tests did not prove good (Wednesday) sblack. We take zero risks and maximum precautions. If it had been the Games, I would have shot”the 2016 Rio Olympic team champion explained to AFP, with the Games looming in less than six weeks.

The world No.6 says he has “felt something on Friday in training but not severe pain”. He must return to Paris to carry out medical imaging. The 35-year-old shooter will therefore not be able to participate in the team event of the European Championships on Saturday either.

Alexandre Bardenet was recalled to replace him by the technical director of the French teams Pierre Guichot. Third French swordsman in the internal selective ranking as well as in the world ranking, Bardenet (34 years old) was excluded from the three starters for the individual Olympic tournament.

He contacted the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF) to contest this decision, suspecting that he was the victim of a sanction for his role in the conflict between the swordsmen and the Federation in recent months.
