With a hit by Mexican Joey Meneses in the ninth inning, the Washington Nationals came back and beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1 yesterday, winning two of the three games in the series.

Down 1-0 late in the ninth and limited to one hit by starter Kyle Freeland, the Nationals were finally able to break loose against reliever Jalen Beeks (4-4).

Michael Toglia, with his home run in the second inning, produced the only score for the Rockies.

Jacob Young started the ninth winning the race for a infield hit. CJ Abrams reached base on a fielder’s choice and reached second on a wild pitch by Beeks. Lane Thomas then doubled to right field, driving in Abrams with the tying run. Thomas stole third base before Meneses’ decisive single.

Dylan Floro obtained the victory after relieving Jake Irvin – who equaled his personal record of 10 strikeouts – with one and a third innings.

Rays beat Pirates

On the other hand, Mexican Randy Arozarena also had a good performance with the Tampa Bay Rays, who beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 to take two of three games in their respective series.

Cuban Yandy Díaz hit a home run off rookie Paul Skenes’ first pitch before starting the eighth inning with a productive two-run single, sealing the victory for the Rays.

Díaz opened the first inning by directing a 100 mph Skenes fastball to right field, and ended up going 3 for 4 with two hits.

Colin Holderman (3-1) replaced Skenes in the eighth, allowing Diaz’s single, which followed Josh Lowe’s single. Panamanian José Caballero scored on Arozarena’s sacrifice fly to put the Rays ahead 2-1 before Richie Palacios extended the lead with another hit productive. Kevin Kelly (2-0) got the last two outs in the seventh inning for Tampa Bay.

In turn, Max Fried paralyzed the Yankees for five innings before retiring, Jarred Kelenic drove in two runs and the Atlanta Braves beat New York 3-1 to win for the eighth time in 10 games after losing five in a row.

Meanwhile, Dominican Framber Valdez pitched seven solid innings, while his compatriots Jeremy Peña and Yainer Díaz each drove in three runs to give the Houston Astros an 8-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles and complete the series sweep of three games.
