Ulysses Llanez: The American Forgotten at Wolfsburg

Ulysses Llanez is entering his last week as a player for VfL Wolfsburg. Ulysses who? The American was not spotted in Wolfsburg once in the past season.

He is still part of the Wolfsburg squad. Both in the kicker app and on the VfL homepage. However, there was not enough space for a photo of Ulysses Llanez on the official club website; a wolf is shown as a placeholder. And the 23-year-old was not given a shirt number either. Nevertheless, he is still right in the middle of a row with Maximilian Arnold, Lovro Majer and co. The contract of the American, who has been quiet in recent years, ends at the end of this week.

In April 2019, Llanez moved from Los Angeles Galaxy to VfL as a great offensive talent when he came of age. He even made it into Wolfsburg’s matchday squad twice in the 2019/2020 season under coach Oliver Glasner. It was not enough to get him a single appearance, but the winger made a name for himself in the A-Junior Bundesliga with eleven goals in 16 games. In 2020, Llanez, who had made his debut in the US national team and scored once in three games under coach Gregg Berhalter, finally signed a professional contract with VfL valid until 2024 – and set off on a journey.

Llanez on the move: First Heerenveen, then St. Pölten

First he was loaned to SC Heerenveen in the Netherlands, but only made five appearances in the Eredivisie. He then moved to Wolfsburg’s cooperation partner SKN St. Pölten for two years. His record across all competitions at the Austrian second division club: 49 competitive matches, 13 goals.

The loan deal did not go smoothly, however. Llanez is said to have returned late from vacation several times, and accidents were often given as the reason. The US boy also regularly lugged around too many kilos. Last summer, the Austrian venture ended for the American, who returned to Wolfsburg purely formally. But he never showed up there.

A serious car accident

“We were in contact with his agent the entire time,” reports VfL sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz. Although Llanez had a valid contract, he played no role in the plans. And was never seen. “Unfortunately, he had a serious car accident last year that made a flight to Germany impossible,” reports Schindzielorz.

And so the time of the former winger hope in Wolfsburg comes to a quiet end on June 30th. “Ulysses’ contract is now running out,” says the sports director, “we wish him all the best for his future.” Whether this lies in professional football is questionable.
