Timo Horn Departs Red Bull Salzburg: A Look Back at His Time with the Club

Former Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn (31) and Red Bull Salzburg are going their separate ways. The club announced this on Friday (June 14, 2024).

Salzburg announced: “With the expiration of his contract signed last winter, Timo Horn’s time with our Red Bulls comes to an end.” The Cologne native only played three Bundesliga games for Salzburg.

Timo Horn leaves RB Salzburg

In the winter, he joined the Austrians after a long search for a new club, and was then in the squad under the new FC coach Gerhard Struber (47), but only sat on the bench. At the end of March, Horn was absent for a good two weeks due to an abdominal muscle injury. Even after that, he was not able to play under Struber.

Coach Struber was then dismissed in mid-April. “We have seen a development in the last three games that has forced us to act,” said managing director Stephan Reiter at the time. Struber and Salzburg had lost a five-point lead over pursuers Sturm Graz in the league within two weeks, and they also lost 3:4 at home to Graz in the cup semi-final on April 4.

Onur Cinel (34) took over for Gerhard Struber on an interim basis. After another three games on the bench, Horn then came into action. The 31-year-old replaced the injured Alex Schlager for three games in the season finale. Despite one defeat (0:2 against Rapid Vienna) and two wins (5:1 against Hartberg and 7:1 against LASK Linz), RB Salzburg only finished second behind Sturm Graz.

The Salzburg team now says: “We thank Timo Horn for his commitment and wish him all the best and much success in his future career!”

The 1.92 meter tall Horn has been active for 1. FC Köln since 2002, initially in the youth sector, then later as a key player in the professional ranks. In total, he played 329 games for the Cologne first team. Under coach Steffen Baumgart (52), he lost his regular place in the FC goal to Marvin Schwäbe (27) in January 2022. In June 2023, Horn left the FC with an uncertain destination. It was not until winter that he found a new club.

Now Horn has to look around again, while his former coach Struber wants to get the Cologne team off the ground. On June 21, FC begins preparations for the new second division season.

And Salzburg also have a new coach for the future: Dutchman Pepijn Lijnders (41) signed a contract until 2027.
