The Rise of Phil Foden: A Stellar 2023/24 Season

2023/24, the season in which Phil Foden shone.

It’s easy to forget that City’s most successful academy player is just 24 years old.

Following the conclusion of the most recent season, Foden added his 17th trophy to his trophy cabinet, which includes six Premier League titles since making his first-team debut seven years ago.

In the last nine months he has gained the trust of everyone on his side, more than in any other season. Foden has reached his peak with his vision for scoring goals, his tireless movement without the ball and his impressive ball control, the English player is the complete package.

And he also had the biggest impact when City needed it most, making him one of, if not the most, important players in Pep Guardiola’s squad as we achieved a historic Premier League four.

Foden has now made 270 appearances for the club and with every minute of play he has shown incredible development in his game, enjoying the opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the world whilst playing alongside them.

In the 2023/24 season he played his highest number of games and minutes. 53 matches, 48 of which he started and in those he scored 27 goals and provided 12 assists.

Foden’s versatility was tested beyond belief in the most recent season, with fans seeing him playing both on the left and right wing, as well as in a more central midfield role, the position Foden himself said he preferred as allows you to be more creative and impactful.

And his stats reflect that to the fullest. Only Jeremy Doku completed more dribbles than Foden’s 69, with the Belgian crossing opponents’ defensive lines with 132 dribbles.

Foden suffered 82 fouls, the most fouled in the squad. And his 162 total shots on goal were only surpassed by Erling Haaland, who shot 179 times.

It didn’t take long for the Etihad Player of the Season to score. He provided an assist for Julian Alvarez in City’s 1-0 win over Newcastle in our second league game.

This happened just after Foden put the ball in the net in our UEFA Super Cup penalty shootout win against Sevilla.

Foden then scored his first competitive goal (within 90 minutes) of the 2023/24 season in a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

As the end of the year approached, the 24-year-old added another trophy to his cabinet. He played in our 3-0 victory over Urawa Red Diamonds in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final.

He then scored in our 4-0 victory over Fluminense in the final to see City lift that trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

Despite our painful Champions League exit, Foden scored in five of the seven games he played, proving himself on the biggest of stages and against the toughest of opponents. Foden scored his penalty in the shootout against Real Madrid, but it wasn’t to be as we were knocked out in the quarter-finals by the league winners.

But that didn’t demotivate Foden, who continued to create and score goals. Vital goals against Bournemouth, a brace against United, a hat-trick against Aston Villa, plus the brace against Brighton have seen Foden reach 50 Premier League goals in his career so far.

And it was clear that his performance in our victory over Villa was one of his favorites, as he considered it one of the team’s most controlled performances of the year.

Foden played the ball to Doku, who set up Rodrigo for the first goal of the night, before Jhon Duran pulled one back for Unai Emery’s side.

Foden was fouled on the edge of Villa’s box and took the ball well to regain City’s lead before half-time. A first-time finish from the edge of the box gave us a two-goal lead.

Then, to cap a fantastic night at the Etihad, Foden regained possession 20 yards from the Villa goal and, despite slipping, slotted the ball into the corner to complete his hat-trick. This was potentially his best performance ever in the blue shirt.

And just before the season came to an end and City were on the verge of winning a Premier League title, Foden was named Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Player of the Year, deserved recognition for his contribution as we made history.

“To become (a) world-class player, you have to win games. He lives to play football. He has always scored goals and now he is winning games with them. When I arrived, he was 17 years old and he already had that. He loves the game. He definitely understands what he has to do, before he wasn’t ready, he understands the game better now.”

“The most important thing is that when he got the ball close to the box, everyone had the feeling that something was going to happen.”

“The feeling that he is aggressive to score, that is why he is becoming a really important player for us and the national team.”

Sergio Aguero, a big figure at City, was full of praise for Foden in a recent interview.

“Without a doubt, Phil Foden is my favorite player,” said the Argentine. “He’s the player who, when I saw him coming into the first team for the first time, I saw his quality, his talent and his vivacity.”

“Once, Pep Guardiola asked me who was the City player I believed in and I pointed out Foden. I would like to meet him again and play because I think he has a huge future at City and I believe that today he is the most complete player City has.”
