The Potential Starting XI Surprise: Will Niclas Füllkrug Replace Kai Havertz in Germany’s Third Euro Match?

In the evening we will play the third and final group match at our home European Championships – really for the third time with the same starting eleven?

At the final press conference before the duel with Switzerland, national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) said that he would not make any changes.

Nagelsmann: “As of now, there are none. It is important that the rhythm is maintained. I do not take the yellow card situation into account because I trust the squad.”

But there could still be a surprise in the starting eleven at short notice.

Niclas Füllkrug (31) is closest to the first team for the European Championship. It is not impossible that Nagelsmann will change his mind at the last minute and put the Borussia Dortmund striker as the only striker instead of Kai Havertz.

This measure would not only be a surprise because Nagelsmann would overturn his statements from the final press conference. In the role discussions before the tournament, the national coach and his assistant Sandro Wagner (36) had previously given Kai Havertz the number one status because he harmonizes better with the DFB players Florian Wirtz (21) and Jamal Musiala (21).

But the Arsenal striker – despite converting a penalty in the opening match – was not really convincing in both group matches against Scotland (5-1) and Hungary (2-0).

Will Julian Nagelsmann bring Niclas Füllkrug into the DFB attack against Switzerland?

Füllkrug (17 international matches / 12 goals) came on as a substitute after around 60 minutes in both games. He scored once against the Scots, but a second goal was disallowed for being offside. He also put in a decent performance against Hungary, but this time he didn’t create any top chances.

For the DFB team, the final group match against Switzerland is about winning the group.

A draw is enough, but Julian Nagelsmann wants to win against Switzerland (9 p.m., ARD, MagentaTV and here in the live ticker). “You play a game to win it. You get more confidence the more games you win in a row.”
