The 2021 European champion in football, the Italian national team, continues to prepare for this year’s championships without center back Francesco Acerbi, the head coach of the national team, Luciano Spalletti, confirmed.

Acherbi, 36, is dealing with a groin injury and is scheduled for surgery next week. The Milan “Inter” footballer will not be able to play for a month, so he will not be able to help the Italians defend the honor of the European champions.

However, a place in the national team was found for Turin “Juventus” midfielder Niccolò Fagioli, who only returned to the team in May after serving a seven-month suspension for betting on football matches. Sandro Tonali, the Newcastle United midfielder, is serving a ten-month disqualification for a similar offense, who will therefore not participate in the championship.

Italian football players will play against Albania, Spain and Croatia in subgroup B. The 2024 European Championship will be held in ten German cities from June 14 to July 14.

The current European champion is Italy, who in 2021 beat England in the final in London in penalty kicks.
