Spanish Alejandro Moro Upsets Brazilian Joao Fonseca in Wimbledon Preliminary Round

The Spanish Alejandro Moro caused a surprise in the preliminary phase of Wimbledon and eliminated the Brazilian Joao Fonseca, one of the greatest promises in this sport. Fonseca, 17 years old and on the verge of entering the top 200 in the world, fell in three sets (4-6, 6-3 and 7-6 (10)) against Moro Cañas, 23 years old and 183rd in the ranking.

The Spaniard, after equalizing in sets and taking the match to the final tiebreaker, was choked in the final stretch of the match and needed six match points to defeat the Brazilian, who was junior number one and US Open champion last year in this modality. Moro Cañas will face Matteo Gigante in the second round and will need two more wins to ensure entry to the final draw of Wimbledon, which represents a prize of at least 60,000 pounds (70,000 euros).

In addition to Moro Cañas, Bernabé Zapata also went to the second round, defeating the Australian Dane Sweeny 7-5 and 6-1. Zapata will now face Mattia Bellucci. Oriol Roca had less luck, who lost to Daniel Elahi Galán (6-3 and 6-4), and Dani Rincón, who lost to Hamad Medjedovic 7-5 and 6-3.
