Ritchie De Laet Says Goodbye to Antwerp and Becomes Coach: Staying at the Club of His Heart

Ritchie De Laet is a professional football player. The defender said goodbye to ‘his’ Antwerp against RSC Anderlecht. He now seems to be staying at the club of his heart.

De Laet is an icon of stock number one. That is obvious. The native of Antwerp played 214 matches for the Great Old over three visits. He scored 7 goals and provided 8 assists. He was still important against Anderlecht by producing a free kick from which Balikwisha scored.

Not to Australia

The question was where the next challenge for 35-year-old De Laet – whose contract had expired – would lie. For a while there seemed to be talk of a move to Australia. “I’m not averse to an adventure, as everyone knows,” he said recently Gazette of Antwerp.

“And neither does the family. My daughters can speak English. The eldest, Lilly, was already going to school in Australia. Whether my wife gets carte blanche? Yes. If she wants to decide, that’s okay. I’m open to everything.” But a move Down Under doesn’t seem to be happening.

De Laet remains in Antwerp

According to the same newspaper, De Laet will start working as a coach at Antwerp. It is not yet clear exactly which team and in which role. The two-time international can stay close to home, in an environment he knows all too well.

It seems like a win-win situation for both De Laet and Antwerp, which will undoubtedly want to pass on its experience to the younger Antwerp guard. The circle seems completely complete for the Antwerp figurehead.
