Victoria Azarenka was the only player to make it into the semifinals in Berlin on a rainy Friday.

The parallels to last year are unmistakable at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin. As with last year’s edition, when the two finalists Petra Kvitova, who was subsequently crowned the winner, and Donna Vekic had to play their quarter-final and semi-final matches in one day, this year the same will apply to the two top favorites Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka if they are successful.

Due to heavy rain, the quarter-final program at Hundekehle had to be ended early. Only Victoria Azarenka managed to secure her place in the round of the last four, but she benefited from the retirement of the Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina, seeded number 3, due to illness when the score was 3:1.

Jessica Pegula was stopped just short of reaching the semifinals in her match against the Czech qualifier Katerina Siniakova. The match had to be abandoned when the score was 7:6 (2), 3:6, 4:2 for the American. This match will continue tomorrow, Saturday, followed by the remaining quarterfinals of Coco Gauff-Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka-Anna Kalinskaya.
