Maria and Michi Shine in Austrian Team’s Historic Medal Win

Maria and Michi make a decisive contribution to the first team medal

– At the end of the European Police Championships in Sofia, Austria won the bronze medal in the mixed team competition, consisting of three men (-73kg, -90kg, +90kg) and two women (-63kg, +63kg). With important victories by Maria Höllwart and Michael Niederdorfer, the two Sanjindo judoka contributed significantly to winning the first Austrian team medal at a European Police Championship.

In their first encounter, the Austrian police selection sensationally beat France 3:2, with Maria and Michi contributing two very important victory points with their successes. Verena Hiden (Leibnitz) took the third point. To reach the final, they suffered a narrow 2:3 defeat against the eventual winners Romania. Here, too, Maria and Michi scored points, beating the 184 kg colossus Natea.

In the bronze medal match against hosts Bulgaria, Austria won 3:2 in an exciting encounter and can therefore look forward to the first team medal at a European Police Championship. The points were won by Verena Hiden, the former Flachgau captain Christoph Kronberger (Burgkirchen), who was called up instead of Michael this time, and of course Maria again. The St. Johann native thus won all of her matches in the team competition, as well as winning the gold medal in the individual event, and left Sofia undefeated after this successful weekend.

The team title of this European Police Championships goes to Romania ahead of Germany and the two third-placed France and Austria.
