JJ Redick Named Head Coach of Los Angeles Lakers, Aims to Bring Championship Glory to the Team

JJ Redick is the new head coach of the former NBA record champions Los Angeles Lakers. The former professional was officially introduced in California on Monday (local time), the day of his 40th birthday. The club did not provide any information about the contract term, but according to consistent US media reports, he will receive a four-year contract.

Redick maintains a good relationship with Lakers superstar LeBron James, and the two recently ran a podcast together. But “Mind the Game” is coming to an end. “I’m out of the content business for now – hopefully for a very long time,” said Redick.

Lakers Vice President Rob Pelinka said: “In addition to his basketball sense, JJ has a feel for people and genuine empathy that is crucial to connecting with the players today. This is an exciting time for Lakers basketball.” Los Angeles parted ways with head coach Darvin Ham in early May after the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Redick himself has set himself big goals: “I want to become a great NBA coach and win championships.” Most recently, he worked as a TV expert for ESPN. Before that, Redick played in the NBA for 15 years, playing as a shooting guard for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks. Redick ended his career in 2021, never winning a title.

Until recently, the Lakers were joint record champions with Boston, but the Celtics overtook LA with their 18th title this year.
