Italian Judo Federation Condemns Racism in Sports: A Call for Unity and Fair Play

Rome, 14 June 2024 – Following the Italian Judo Championships held last Saturday in Jesolo, some athletes who won the tricolor subsequently received racist insults via social networks.

Showing full solidarity with their athletes and their sports clubs, FIJLKAM and the National Technical Directorate of the Judo Sector express firm condemnation of any form of racial discrimination, in the belief that it is not the color of the skin that expresses the value of the men or women who they represent Italy and Italians in the world and in the world of sport.

All the more reason, in the imminence of the start of the Olympic Games in Paris, we believe that sport must continue to be an instrument of union and national identity: being Italian means competing under the same flag regardless of ethnic characteristics, with respect of the principles of ethics, of fair play and, in our case, of a moral code in which the word racism has no place.

The Federation intends to continue with maximum incisiveness and with new initiatives – also through appropriate measures with the federal justice bodies and the competent authorities, should other similar episodes occur – the fight against these behaviors of profound incivility and sporting and social subculture.
