The DFB team’s furious victory against Scotland at the start of the 2024 European Championship made an impression – also with the international press.

The “rocket launch” (“Mirror”) of the German national team into EURO 2024 caused a sensation in the international media. After the clear success against Scotland, there is talk of a “machine” (“Marca”). The Italian sports daily “Gazzetta dello Sport”, however, sees a Germany that is “already frighteningly” in form. The press comments at a glance:

“The Sun”: “SHOWER OF SCOTLAND – the Tartan Army falls silent as the unbridled Germans make a sensational start to their European Championship.”

“Mirror”: “The slipping Scots are humiliated by Germany with ten men and five goals. The curtain rises on the European Championship – and the hosts get off to a rocket start.”

“Daily Mirror”: “The hosts are sending a signal. England has no monopoly on young attacking talent at the 2024 European Championships, and Scotland have become painfully aware of this.”

Kerstin von Kalckreuth, Sportschau, 15.06.2024 07:52 a.m.

“The Herald”: “A humiliating defeat. Steve Clarke’s men were given a sobering reminder of how brutal top-level international football is. However, it was already clear that their chances of progressing would depend on their other two group matches.”

“The Scotsman”: “Scotland’s euro bubble bursts in Munich. This night of utter recklessness raises big questions.”

“The National”: “Germany stormed out of the starting blocks to celebrate their biggest opening victory at a European Championship.”

“Gazzetta dello Sport”: “This Germany is already frightening: spectacle and five goals against a non-existent Scotland. A demonstration of strength. Clear and obvious.”

“Corriere dello Sport”: “Germany unleashed. They give Scotland five goals at the start of the European Championship.”

“La Repubblica”: “The 2024 European Championship begins with a show from the home team. A dream start for Nagelsmann’s national team, which is already three goals ahead after the first half.”

“Marca”: “Germany, what a machine! Germany has presented its dream candidacy for the European Championship. Not even the usual fear of the hosts in the opening match could stop this extremely strong team.”

“AS”: “There are two devils loose in Munich. Musiala and the 21-year-old Wirtz were the heroes of the German team’s successful debut at the European Championship. Anyone who thought the hosts were not ready for this European Championship is wrong.”

“Le Monde”: “A true demonstration by the German team at the start of their European Championship. That’s what you call a successful start! Serious, precise and hardworking, the Germans left the Scots no chance.”

“Le Parisien”: “La Mannschaft is starting the European Championship with a bang. Even if the weakness of the decimated Scots relativizes the extent of this great success, Germany has dispelled some doubts.”

“L’Equipe”: “A dream start. It is of course still too early to judge whether the team will experience the summer fairytale that it has been hoping for since the 2006 World Cup, the last home tournament, but in any case it has written a first chapter on this Friday evening that is strongly reminiscent of it.”

“Blick”: “Germans take the Scots’ coat off. The mass is already read at halftime.”

“NZZ”: “The hosts made a statement right at the start of the tournament. But the Scots’ performance was almost unbeatable in terms of harmlessness.”

“Kurier”: “Germany has achieved what the DFB players had all longed for: an initial spark that should fuel euphoria in the country like the 2006 World Cup summer fairytale.”

Standard: “The word summer fairytale must prepare for overtime. The 5:1 should force the hosts into euphoria.”

“Austria”: “German footballers celebrate their first EURO party. The DFB team has made a sensational start to the European Championship at home.”
