In Memoriam: Legendary Sports Commentator Günter Zapf Passes Away at 66

Günter Zapf is dead. The sports commentator was only 66 years old. His employer DAZN announced this on Monday (June 24, 2024).

“It hurts to write this: Our long-time commentator Günter Zapf has sadly passed away at the age of 66. Our thoughts are with his family. Thank you for everything, dear Günter. Rest in peace,” DAZN wrote on Instagram.

Günter Zapf: Wrestling and especially football were his passion

Zapf also worked for the TV channel Sport1. He commented on many sports for both channels, such as football, baseball, golf, ice hockey and wrestling.

Sport1 wrote on X: “The SPORT1 family mourns the loss of Günter Zapf. Günter worked for SPORT1 and previously for DSF for many years: with his inimitable style and voice, he shaped our reporting. Dear Günter, we will never forget you – forever #rightinthemselves in our hearts!”

Zapf’s colleagues are also mourning the veteran commentator on social media. His DAZN colleague Flo Hauser wrote on Instagram: “We accompanied many shows and games together. Legend Günter was a role model. Always in a good mood and always willing to listen to me. We will miss your positive Bavarian manner. Rest in peace, my friend – you pioneer of football & wrestling in Germany. Thank you for all the moments, your time and the advice – it was an honor!”

Zapf, who used to play football for the Munich Cowboys, made his professional breakthrough as a German wrestling voice. For almost 20 years he commented on WWE events on various TV channels together with Carsten Schaefer.

“So Günter does it!”

And that was despite the fact that football was of course his great passion. And that was at a time when the sport from the USA was far less popular in Germany than it is today. How did he get into wrestling? It was actually by chance. “I was the US sports expert and wrestling comes from America – so Günter does that. That’s how it went back then,” Zapf reported years ago in a Sport1 podcast. A coincidence that was to accompany him professionally for several years.

Last year he commentated on some NFL games for DAZN. At the Super Bowl in February 2024 in Las Vegas, he was on site for Bayerischer Rundfunk.
