Football: Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic dies suddenly at 26

Terrible drama for the Montenegro national team. The Eastern European selection has just learned of the death of its 26-year-old goalkeeper Matija Sarkic. The Montenegrin international (9 caps) had just concluded the meeting with his team, not qualified for Euro 2024. The Milwall player (English D2) even started against Belgium on June 5 during a modest defeat (0-2) during which he made 8 saves.

His “devastated” club

According to local media, Sarkic started feeling unwell in his apartment in Budva, Montenegro. Despite the arrival of help and the support of his friends, he died around 6:30 a.m. this Saturday morning. The reasons for his death are still unknown.

“Milwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26. Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this extremely sad time. The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected,” read a club statement.

The former substitute goalkeeper for Aston Villa and Stoke City established himself in goal for Milwall, who he joined in August. He has played 33 games with the English club (13th in the Championship) this season.
