Exploring the History and Thrill of Shooting Sports at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

A short story

Sport shooting has been practiced for several centuries in Europe, since the invention of firearms in the early 15th century, following the great popularity of archery. In several countries, shooters’ guilds were formed that organized competitions and established rules. With the industrial revolution, the National Rifle Association (NRA) to promote rifle shooting. In 1907, it was the turn of the Fédération Internationale de Tir Sportif to regulate and standardize the rules for shooting competitions throughout the world.

The shooting competitions are divided between carbine and pistol, in shooting ranges where athletes must hit targets at distances of 10, 25 and 50 meters, kneeling, lying down or standing. The goal is to get as close to the center of the target as possible to get the most points. The rifle competitionson the other hand, take place outdoors and are more focused on speed, with targets projected into the air that require great concentration and reflexes.

In the history of the Olympic Games

The shooting gallery was present at the first modern Olympic Games of Athens in 1896, except in 1904 and 1928. The United States has won by far the most Olympic medals, followed by China and Russia, as well as Italy. The 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico marked a turning point with the introduction of 50-meter pistol and 50-meter rifle shooting for women.

The French did particularly well in the discipline of 10 meterswith Philippe Héberlé, gold medal in 1984, Nicolas Berthelot and then Franck Badiou, silver medals in 1988 and 1992, Jean-Pierre Amat, bronze medal in 1996, and Christine Chuard, second place at the 1994 world championships !
