European Fencing Championships: at what time and on which channel to follow the dress rehearsal for the Olympics

It is a meeting of paradoxical importance which must at the same time allow us to launch ourselves for the Paris Olympic Games but whose results will be swept away by a medal or a poor performance this summer at the Olympics. The European Fencing Championships bring together this week (June 18 to 23) the continental elite of this sport at the St. Jakob Hall in Basel for a final rehearsal before the meeting in the capital at the Grand Palais.

The Blues, who will aim for at least eight medals at home this summer, are traveling to Switzerland with the headliners destined to shine at the Games, and by extension to mark the spirits and the prize list of this Euro: Romain Cannone, Yannick Borel, Ysaora Thibus, Marie-Florence Candassamy, Enzo Lefort, Sara Balzer, and Manon Apithy-Brunet are among the French selection. Names, but with very different forms and situations.

The foilist Ysaora Thibus will be the most observed individual case. Suspended at the beginning of February after a positive doping test, the 2022 world champion was cleared in May by the disciplinary tribunal of the international fencing federation. This accepted the thesis of contamination by the athlete’s spouse, the former fencer Race Imboden, and allowed him to return to competition. In Basel, the Frenchwoman comes to find rhythm and some certainty for her first outing since the end of January.

Men’s epee tensions in the background

Another situation under scrutiny is that of male swordsmen. In a season already marked by tensions between some of the shooters and the staff, the weapon added a new psychodrama with the non-selection for the Olympic Games of Alexandre Bardenet, double world team champion. A choice contested by reigning Olympic champion Romain Cannone and Yannick Borel, who left Insep to train mainly in clubs this season.

But other leaders of the Blues arrive in much calmer situations. This is the case of Enzo Lefort, in the men’s foil, or even of the sabers, Sara Balzer in the lead. The world number one has never finished off the podium this season and has even won three World Cup rounds. In Basel, she will try to win her first major individual competition, after being dominated in the final by her compatriot, Manon Apithy-Brunet.
