Euro 2024: who is Jesús Gil Manzano, the Austria-France referee?

A novice at the Austria-France whistle. For the first meeting of the Blues in this Euro 2024 against Austria, UEFA has appointed Jesús Gil Manzano to lead the debates in Düsseldorf, this Monday evening (9 p.m.). This is the first time that the 40-year-old Spaniard will referee a match in a Euro.

But Jesús Gil Manzano remains an experienced referee. With 22 Champions League matches under his belt, the man in black has even already rubbed shoulders with several French clubs including PSG twice this season in the group stage against Borussia Dortmund (2-0 victory) and AC Milan ( defeat 1-2). He was also on the whistle for the Europa League semi-final return between Atalanta and OM (3-0). All without major incident.

At the heart of a controversy with Bellingham

Manzano has been competing in Euro qualifiers for several years now. On September 7, 2019, the Spaniard crossed paths with France for the first time during a large victory for the Blues against Albania (4-1) with a view to Euro 2021.

Much more recently, Jesús Gil Manzano especially directed the friendly match for Didier Deschamps’ men against Germany on March 23 (0-2). A very bad memory for the Blues, defeated without fighting against the Mannschaft. That day, Kylian Mbappé and Adrien Rabiot, expected to start this Monday, received a yellow card.

A professional referee in the Spanish first division since 2012, Manzano was elected best referee in the championship for the 2017-2018 season. This season, he was at the heart of a big controversy during a Real Madrid match in Valencia. The Spaniard canceled a Bellingham goal at the end of added time by whistling the end of the match a few seconds before the ball entered the net.
