Euro 2024: on the legislative elections, “everyone thinks like me in the French team”, the anti-RN call from Marcus Thuram

He didn’t come out! Obviously eagerly awaited on the political situation in France, due to his commitment against racism, Marcus Thuram delivered an incisive speech before the legislative elections of June 30 and July 7, during a press point organized this Saturday in Paderborn (Germany). ). The Inter Milan and Blues striker wants the French to mobilize to block the National Rally in two weeks. He speaks of a “sad and very serious” situation and points out, without naming them, television programs which would play into the hands of the far right.

We know your societal and political commitments, particularly against racism. What is your view on the situation in France with the rise of the far right?

MARCUS THURAM. She is sad and very serious. I learned this after the match against Canada. We were all a bit shocked in the locker room, it’s sad… Messages are conveyed every day on TV to help this party get through. As Ousmane (Dembélé) said, we must tell everyone to go and vote. We must fight every day so that this does not happen again and that the National Rally (RN) does not pass.

You say that messages are conveyed every day on TV. What are you thinking about ?

I’m not going to cite specific shows, but when I’m in Italy and I turn on my TV, and I see certain debates… I think it’s done to facilitate the rise of the RN.

Do you want, within the group, to convey a common message on this subject of the legislative elections?

I have no doubt that everyone shares my vision within the France team. Afterwards, we are in a free country. Everyone must do what they feel, what they consider right. We can be more modest on this subject, but I repeat, I have no doubt that everyone in Blue thinks like me.

Why is this important to you?

Saying that we have to go vote is not enough. We must explain how we got here and detail the seriousness of the situation. It’s not complicated to talk about it. It comes from my personality, my upbringing. I know that lots of people follow me on social networks, I have to pass on certain messages.

The far right is also omnipresent in Italy. Does this weigh on you?

In Italy too, yes, there is a problem. We saw him with Mike (Maignan) in the stadiums. For me, personally, it’s not a problem because I’m a football player. But it is for thousands of people in Italy. In turn, this is a problem for me as well.

Do you talk about the political situation with your father Lilian who positioned himself against the National Front and Jean-Marie Le Pen twenty years ago?

My father doesn’t encourage me to do anything except to be a well-behaved boy. Growing up with him, having discussions with him, I feel responsible for keeping this kind of message.

What relationship do you have with Olivier Giroud who dubbed you here on Friday?

I have great admiration for the player. I was at Clairefontaine as a youth and already saw him score goals in Ligue 1 and with the French team. I make the most of it before he leaves to steal her little secrets but he doesn’t want to tell me everything (laughs). It’s an honor, a pleasure, because I see the top scorer of the France team every day.

What impression has N’Golo Kanté made on you since his return?

I have the impression that three of them came to Clairefontaine (smile). It’s horrible, we can no longer play in training when he is on the opposing team. On the other hand, as soon as we have it with us, it’s incredible. He reminds us why he is one of the very best midfielders in the world.
