Edwin Díaz returns from his injury and regains his closer role with the Mets

NEW YORK – The Puerto Rican right-hander of the Mets, Edwin Diaz — who was on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder impingement — was activated and expects to immediately resume the team’s closer role, according to the club’s manager, Venezuelan Carlos Mendoza.

Before the injury, the right-hander was nowhere near the level of the pitcher who won the Trevor Hoffman Award for the best reliever in the National League in 2022. In 20 games this season, the Naguabo native has allowed 12 earned runs in 20 tickets.

At one point, after a game against the Marlins on May 18 — in which he allowed four runs in one-third of an inning — Díaz acknowledged that he had lost confidence. He returned to the mound five days later and made two appearances against San Francisco at Citi Field, in which he allowed one streak in two innings before being affected by the shoulder injury.

The Mets still have hopes of making the postseason. They are found at 3.5 Giants games for the third Wild Card of the National League.

“In order for us to fight for this, we need Díaz to be Edwin Díaz,” Mendoza said. “He feels good, physically and mentally, so I feel comfortable with him returning to the closer role.”

The Mets are convinced that Diaz is the right one for the ninth inning, due to the way he looked during his two rehab appearances in the minors with Class-A Brooklyn. He adjusted the mechanics of it. His slider and fastball appear to be back to normal. Díaz took the mound with Brooklyn and did not allow a run in two innings during those two games.

Mendoza is convinced that Diaz’s confidence has returned, based on the conversations they have had in recent days.

“The conviction. You can see it in his face,” said Mendoza. “He wasn’t the same when he was having problems. You could tell that it was affecting him a little. But after the last few days — even though he was facing minor league hitters — you can see that he is in a good place and ready to play.”
