Denmark-Serbia (0-0): the Danes snatch second place, a sad outcome for the Serbs

The status quo persists in Group C of Euro 2024. After the two draws of the second day, the third again offered two points sharing, and allowed England to take first place in the group . The Danes finished in second place despite an almost perfect tie with Slovenia.

Finally, it was thanks to a better result than the Slovenes during… the Euro qualifiers that the Danes snatched second place and the right to challenge the host country, Germany, in the round of 16.

The Slovenes are nevertheless qualified for the round of 16 since they are guaranteed to be among the best third-placed teams. Serbia leaves the tournament.

And she leaves Germany on a bad note. Because this final match in Group C was disappointing, tasteless. In search of a victory to try to secure first place in the group, the Danes were especially afraid of losing and leaving the competition. The Serbs were more offensive, but were very imprecise, as they have been since the start of the tournament.

Eriksen could have scored

It was the Danes who had the first real opportunity of the evening, with Alexandre Bah’s header flying to the right of the cage defended by Predrag Rajkovic (16th). With a nice combination on the ground, Christian Eriksen then tried his luck from afar, but his shot was narrowly deflected by the Serbian goalkeeper (21st).

Apart from a few dangerous corners, the spectators at the Allianz Arena in Munich had little offensive to eat. Aleksandar Mitrovic tried to claim a penalty on multiple occasions, but French referee François Letexier did not give in to the Serbian striker’s injunctions. Aware that qualification was a given, the Danes calmly managed the end of the match.

Thanks to this draw, Denmark offers itself a round of 16 against Germany and places itself in the upper part of the table, the toughest. Slovenia will have to wait for Wednesday’s results to know their opponent, while England await a third in the group in the lower part of the table.
