The elite of European young baseball players will meet in Regensburg in a few weeks. From July 8th to 14th, the Armin Wolf Arena, home of the Guggenberger Legionnaires Regensburg, will be the venue for the U18 European Championship. Fans can watch a total of 42 games on two pitches. The tournament will officially open on July 8th at 6 p.m. with the match between Germany and Croatia. The first pitch will be given by Albert Füracker, Bavarian Minister of Finance and Home Affairs.

Experienced hosts

The Regensburgers not only have what is probably the most beautiful baseball arena in Europe, but also have a lot of experience and expertise in organizing major international events. The Guggenberg Legionnaires recently demonstrated this at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier, the qualifying tournament for the World Championship. The Legionnaires are Germany’s largest baseball club and have already won a number of national titles. Last year, the Regensburgers won the German Cup.

Twelve teams fight for the title

A total of twelve elite teams from across Europe will compete for the coveted title in two strong groups at the U18 European Championship in July. Group A includes Spain, Italy, Israel, Austria, Croatia and hosts Germany. Group B consists of the Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Belgium and Sweden.

The championship will be played in each group according to the round-robin system, so that every game is decisive for the team to advance. After the round-robin phase, the best teams will advance to the semi-finals, in which the group winner of Group A will face the group runner-up of Group B and vice versa. The final will take place on July 14 at 7 p.m.

Fans will be excited to see whether Spain can defend its 2022 title after its 6-2 victory over the Netherlands in the rain-shortened final in Brno, Czech Republic. The Czech Republic, Italy and France have also shown strong performances in previous title fights.

Of course, the hosts also want to have a say in the awarding of the title. For a number of players, the European Championship will be a home game in two respects. The German team alone includes six baseball players from Regensburg. The teams from Italy, France and Spain also include players from the Guggenberger Legionnaires and the Bavarian Baseball Academy based in Regensburg.
