Cleveland Cavaliers Hire Kenny Atkinson as New Head Coach

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers are hiring Golden State assistant Kenny Atkinson as their new coach, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday.

The Cavaliers have been searching for a new leader for their young team after firing JB Bickerstaff last month despite two straight playoff appearances.

The sides have reached an agreement and the details of Atkinson’s contract have not yet been finalized, the source said on condition of anonymity because the team has not made public its search for who will fill the vacancy.

ESPN.com was the first to report that Atkinson would sign with Cleveland.

Atkinson was one of at least six known candidates to interview with the team since Bickerstaff’s firing, a week after Cleveland was eliminated from the playoffs by the Boston Celtics.

With head coaching experience, an offensive mindset and a strong reputation in player development, Atkinson went 118-190 in his three-plus seasons with the Brooklyn Nets overseeing the team’s rise to a playoff berth in 2019. He appeared poised for a long run with Brooklyn, but had a surprise split from the franchise in 2020.

He spent one season with the Los Angeles Clippers before going to Golden State, where he was coach Steve Kerr’s top assistant.

With the Warriors, Atkinson got a look at one of the league’s best offensive players in Stephen Curry and immersed himself in a dynamic offensive system he could implement with Cleveland.

Hiring a new coach was the priority for the Cavs. Next up is getting All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell to agree to a long-term contract extension, the NBA draft and perhaps restructuring the roster with trades.
