Limited draft workouts for Bronny James probably planned

Bronny James has apparently attracted the interest of some NBA teams, but is not showing up everywhere. Last week it was reported that some teams were having trouble arranging a workout with LeBron James’ son before the upcoming draft. Bronny has only trained with the Lakers and Phoenix Suns so far. His agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports now revealed to Jonathan Givony (ESPN) that this was planned and not special treatment.

“This is nothing new,” said Paul: “The goal is to find a team that values my player and guide him there. It is important to understand that this has been my strategy for years with many clients. Especially with those who still need to be developed, like Bronny. My approach is planned.”

“With Bronny, it’s just like with other clients,” Paul continued: “I tell interested teams directly what they need to know. If they don’t give him a real deal, we don’t even need to talk. It’s hard to really develop with a two-way contract.” Paul cited his clients Talen Horton-Tucker, Brandon Boston Jr. and Chris Livingston as examples of success. All three received fully guaranteed contracts despite being drafted late in the second round.

“There are other teams that love Bronny too,” Paul stressed, “Minnesota, Dallas and Toronto, for example. If the Lakers don’t take him, another team will. Mavs GM Nico Harrison is like an uncle to him, at 58 he would give him a guaranteed contract. Raptors president Masai Ujiri loves him, they could take him at 31 without seeing him. Workouts are not crucial for these teams.”
