Belgium’s Lianne Tan Gears up for Fourth Olympic Games

Lianne Tan, 33, is preparing to compete in the Olympic Games for the fourth time this summer. The Limburg dentist has been playing at the high international level in badminton for many years and will once again defend the colors of Belgium in Paris.

“It’s a bit special that I’ve been able to qualify so many times. If you had told Lianne that when she was eight years old, she probably wouldn’t have believed it,” Tan said. “But it is perhaps due to the atypical path that I followed. In the meantime, I did six years of study and that perhaps allowed me to prolong my playing career a little. Paris will not be an end point either. Will I continue until Los Angeles in 2028? I don’t want to think about it too much.

In recent years, Tan has combined his work as a dentist with badminton. “For the moment, I’m focusing more on sport, with a view to Paris. I train for two to three hours in the morning, followed by weight training sessions. In the afternoon, I work, which gives me takes time off. But it’s not easy to work less. There is a severe shortage of dentists and it’s sometimes difficult to say no to patients.”

Eliminated in the group stage in London, Rio and Tokyo, Tan aims to pass this milestone in Paris. “We are divided into groups of three or four and only the first one will go through. I hope to get there even if it won’t be easy. The draw has not yet been made and that makes ordering tickets complicated. But it “It’s close to home so I hope my family and friends will be there,” said Tan.
