Austria Wins Group D in Thrilling Final Matchday with Twists Galore

Twists galore!

Austria wins the thrilling Group D at the end of a spectacular final matchday, while France and Holland are also in the round of 16. Poland was already eliminated on the second matchday.

Netherlands – Austria

What a wild kick!

Austria beats Holland 3-2, destroying the Holland festival in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

The Oranje party was crashed early on – by an own goal! BVB star Donyell Malen smashed a cross from Prass into his own goal (6th).

Malen of all people… the striker was rotated into the starting eleven for Leverkusen’s Frimpong and actually wanted to take his chance. But nothing came of it, and after the unfortunate goal the Oranje striker was later substituted due to injury.

Just listen: The Austrians are celebrating so beautifully!

Holland behind!

Exciting: Under coach Rangnick, the Austrians are lightning starters, scoring seven goals in the first quarter of an hour in seven international matches this year.

How bad are things going for Oranje? Koeman has had enough after 35 minutes and brings on Leipzig’s Simons for the much more defensive Veerman. Incidentally, this causes a lot of sadness for the substitute…

After that it gets really spectacular!

The Dutch came out of the break strong and quickly equalized through Gakpo (47′). But it only lasted a short time because Bremen professional Schmidt headed the Austrians back into the lead (59′).

And again Koeman’s eleven comes back, Depay scores to make it 2-2 (76th) – before Sabitzer makes the final score (80th).

So the Austrians win the group – Holland advances as one of the best third-placed teams in the group.

France – Poland

France only plays 1:1, slips up against the already eliminated Poland – and thus comes in a disappointing second place!

There is already good news for the French before kick-off: Kylian Mbappé (25) will play from the start after sitting on the bench for 90 minutes against Holland (0-0) due to his broken nose.

Now masked Mbappé is back – and is scoring for the first time at a European Championship!

The superstar has remained goalless in five games so far, but has now scored in the sixth. Has the European Championship deadlock now been broken?

The debut goal required Polish help. At first, the French were repeatedly thwarted by the brilliant goalkeeper Skorupski, before Kiwior brought Dembelé down in the penalty area after half-time. Mbappé remained ice-cold from the penalty spot (56′).

As he celebrates, the new Madrilenian tears the black mask (now the third model) from his face and celebrates the lead.

Mbappé completely maskless!

But it’s not enough because Lewandowski also scores from the penalty spot (79′).

The Barcelona striker needed two attempts to do this, however, and Maignan parried the first one – but his feet left the line too early. So the penalty was retaken – and Lewandowski stayed cool.
