Angelique Kerber Receives Wildcard for Wimbledon: Good News for the Three-Time Grand Slam Winner

Good news for Angelique Kerber! The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner has received a wildcard for the grass court classic in Wimbledon. The organizers announced this. What is striking is that a total of four former Grand Slam winners received a wildcard for the main draw.

Germany’s tennis hope Angelique Kerber, who is currently ranked 224th in the WTA world rankings due to her maternity leave, has secured a place in the main draw of the third Grand Slam tournament of the season.

The 36-year-old from Kiel, who triumphed in the English tennis mecca in 2018 and reached the final in 2016 and the semifinals in 2012 and 2021, is one of seven players currently given a wildcard by the organizers.

In addition, the British Francesca Jones, Yuriko Lily Miyazaki and Heather Watson and Emma Raducanu as well as the former world number one Naomi Osaka from Japan and Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark will be allowed to compete. Wozniacki and Osaka also paused their careers due to pregnancies and have not yet been able to build on their previous successes.

A total of eight starting places in the singles competitions can be awarded to players who are not automatically qualified. The women’s septet already has nine victories in Grand Slam tournaments together. Osaka won four times, Kerber three times, Raducanu and Wozniacki once each.

Former DTB talent in the men’s main field

In the men’s category, however, only Britons have received wildcards so far. Liam Broady, Jan Choinski, Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Ferry, Billy Harris, Paul Jubb and Henry Searle are the lucky ones. Choinski competed for the DTB until 2018.

The tournament at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club begins on July 1st.

Kerber will prepare for Wimbledon next week at the tournament in Bad Homburg.

In Berlin, the former world number one was defeated by Czech Linda Noskova in the first round on Tuesday despite a good performance.
