Unexpected Turn of Events: Danielle Collins Exits Roland-Garros in Shocking Upset

Big surprise in the women’s draw at Roland-Garros. After winning the first set of her duel against the Serbian Olga Danilovic (n° 125), then leading 5-3, 15-0 in the second set, the American Danielle Collins, 10th player in the world, completely collapsed and thus takes the door from the second round.

Since announcing that 2024 would be her last year on the professional circuit, Collins had nevertheless had a string of convincing results, winning titles in Miami then in Charleston, and again a finalist in Strasbourg just before arriving in Paris. But while she seemed to have succeeded the hardest this Thursday against Danilovic, from qualifying, the American visibly felt pain in her neck or shoulder and lost the thread of her tennis. She even requested a medical timeout when she had just been broken at the start of the third set.

Diminished, Collins was unable to recover and ended up laying down her arms after 2 hours 36 minutes of duel. In tears on court No. 10 after her match point, Danilovic advances to the third round where she will face Croatian Donna Vekic (No. 40).
