Ministry of the Interior Cancels May 9 Celebrations in Kyrgyzstan for Public Safety

The Ministry of the Interior clarified that the cancellation is “in order to guarantee public order and security” and “a series of measures are being adopted to prevent and eliminate the risks of violations of public order and the commission of crimes in places of massive concentration.

The entity called on the population to be understanding with “the security measures adopted.”

Every year, Russia and most of the former Soviet republics celebrate on May 9 the triumph of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War, which covers the period of World War II between June 22, 1941. and the Nazi capitulation on May 9, 1945.

In Kyrgyzstan, May 9 is a national holiday. More than 360 thousand people left the republic to fight on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, a third of them did not return home.

A total of 72 Kyrgyz soldiers were awarded the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union, some of them twice.

Last year, tens of thousands of people in Kyrgyzstan participated in the traditional march, during which they carried portraits of their relatives who fell fighting and defeating fascism.
