French Women Face Tough Opponents in WTA 500 Tournament Draw: Strasbourg Preview

Denis Naegelen, director of the WTA 500 tournament in Strasbourg, and Sorana Cirstea (32nd), were not light-handed regarding the opponents of the French women admitted to the final draw at the time of the draw.

The least spoiled is Diane Parry (50th) who inherited Elina Svitolina, seeded No. 7 and 19th in the world. In the event of victory, Parry could face the one who is ahead of her in the French ranking, namely Clara Burel (45th). Burel will challenge Karolina Pliskova (52nd), an opponent with an impressive record (17 titles, 2 Grand Slam finals), but rarely at ease on clay. Quite the opposite of Clara Burel who explained that she appreciated matches on ocher “because they allow longer exchanges and require you to build the point. We can use a wider range of shots there than on hard.”

Invited for what will be the penultimate tournament of her career, Alizé Cornet (99th) will have to demonstrate all her combativeness to overcome the obstacle Emma Navarro (22nd). The winner of this match will then face the No. 2 seed, Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Last Frenchwoman admitted directly into the table, Fiona Ferro (149th) also benefits from an invitation. She will try to do justice to it against a qualifier.

The first four seeds, Marketa Vondrousova (6th), Beatriz Haddad Maia (13th), Danielle Collins (15th) and Madison Keys (16th) are exempt from the first round.
